Winter in Takayama: Hida no Sato

Located on the hill overlooking Takayama is the Hida no Sato museum 飛騨の里 – an open air museum exhibiting over 30 typical farmhouses and other traditional buildings from the Hida region.The museum’s main attractions are a number of gassho-zukuri houses. The massive farmhouses with their steep, thatched roofs which look like praying hands (“gassho-zukuri”) were moved here from the nearby Shirakawa-go region in order to preserve them. Visitors can explore the houses and see how the locals traditionally lived.

Access: The Hida Folk Village is a 30 minute walk or 10 minute bus ride from JR Takayama Station. The “Sarubobo Bus” provides departs at :00 and :40 between 09:00 and 16:00 and costs 200 Yen.
Between January 15 & February 28 the village is lit up between 17:30 and 21:00 and between 08:30 and 17:00 (depending upon the level of snow) visitors can try their hand at traditional skis and skates and make their own snow house. During this period, whatever the weather, visitors can try on traditional Hida winter clothing and pose for a commemorative photo.
Straw Craft わら細工体験
If you visit the village’s Nishioka Residence 西岡家 on a weekend or holiday between 10:00 and 15:00, you can also learn how to make your own pair of traditional footwear from straw left over from the annual rice crop. No reservations are required for individuals and small groups. The course costs 1000 Yen.

Access By Highway Bus
Express coaches depart for Takayama daily at 07:30, 08:30, 09:30, 10:30, 13:00, 14:30, 16:00, 17:30, 20:30 from bus stop # 7 on the 3F of Nagoya Station’s Meitetsu Bus Center; takes about 2.5 hours and costs 2900 Yen one way or 5000 Yen round trip. Reservations are required and can be made at the bus center, by calling the bus center at 052-582-0489 (Japanese only), or by booking online at www.highwaybus.com.
Access By Train
From platform 2 of JR Nagoya Station, take the Hida Express (ひだ) on JR Takayama Line directly to Takayama. Trains depart every 60 to 90 minutes between 07:43 and 19:48; seat reservations are required before boarding. Costs 5670 Yen one-way and takes just over 2 hours.
