Poetry Reading in English and Japanese: A Multimedia Event
(NIC Event Information)
Harold G. Slovic has lived almost half his life in Toyota and will soon retire from his position as Professor of English at Aichi Gakusen University to return home to the USA. In this edition of the Toyota International Association’s English Salon Professor Slovic will take a look into both Japanese and English poetry using multi-media – followed by a question and answer session.
[Poetry is language in its most powerful form, used for the purpose of (self) expression. The relationship between poetry and everyday language can be compared to the relationship between an oil painting and a signboard. The latter communicates a specific message useful for ordinary living, but the former may communicate the painter’s deep message that applies to all people in all places and at all times. As the great American poetess, Emily Dickenson, wrote: “…internal difference, where the meanings are.” ]
