THE OSU STREET PERFORMERS FESTIVAL

34回大須大道町人祭

This annual festival started in 1978 as an alternative to the Nagoya Festival. Around 250 (45 groups) street performers, musicians, and artists will be showing off their skills with their dances, juggling, and magic routines. The highlight of the festival are the oiran processions through the packed streets of the Osu shopping district. The oiran, were high-class, Edo-era female entertainers only available to Japan’s wealthiest and highest ranking officials.

  • When: Friday, October 14 , Saturday, October 15 & Sunday, October 16
  • Access: Osu Kannon Subway Station, exit 2.
  • Friday pre-event: October 14 (18:00 – 19:00) at Banshoji Temple in Osu万松寺会場
  • Street Performers: October 15 (12:00 – 21:00) & October 16 (11:00 – 19:00).
  • Oiran Processions: October 15 (11:00 – 12:15, 14:00 – 15:15, 18:30 – 19:45) & October 16 (11:00 – 12:30, 14:00 – 15:15, 16:30 – 17:30).

WORLD COLLABORATION FESTIVAL 2011

発見!体験!世界大交流祭 ワールド・コラボ・フェスタ2011

After the outpouring of sympathy, aid, and assistance from around the World in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan once again feels that it has a renewed connection with the global community. To reflect this, this year’s theme is “Working Together! We are All One World”. There is also a raffle and the prize draw will take place on October 23 (17:15 -). Admission is free!

  • When: Saturday, October 22 & Sunday, October 23
  • Where: Oasis 21 オアシス21 in Sakae (both days 10:00 – 18:00) and Mochi-no-ki Hiroba 久屋大通公園もちの木広場in front of the TV Tower (both days 10:00 – 16:00).

World Booths & Workshops コラボ広場 – Mochi-no-ki Hiroba – (both days 10:00 – 16:00)
Sample food, buy goods, take part in various educational workshops and activities, and learn about good causes at over 60 booths hosted by non-profit groups and organizations.

Discover the World with NIC at the NIC Booth 世界へえ?ほう!フェスティバル
Foreign residents from 14 countries including Vietnam, India, and the New Zealand introduce their home countries and compare them to Japan in a series of short, 30 minute seminars (in Japanese) to the public as part of the NIC’s Classroom for Global Citizens program. October 22 (10:00 – 15:00) – “Eco-living”, October 23 (10:00 – 16:00)- “Hobbies and Pastimes”.

World Stage ワールドステージ – Oasis 21 – both days 10:00 – 18:00
As well on-stage performances of dance and music from around the world, ex-pro-soccer player Yasuhiko OKUDERA, the first Japanese player to play top flight football in Europe, will give a talk on international understanding based on his first-hand experiences in sport followed by an on-stage keep-ups competition.

Stage highlights include:

  • October 22 – Gospel choir (10:05 – ), MDG – rap/reggae/funk (10:30 – ), Capoeira Show (10:55 – 11:15), Sri Lankan Dance (12:25 – 12:45), Taiko Drum Show (13:15 – 13:35), Yasuhiko Okudera (13:40 – 14:40), World Dance Carnival (15:20 – 15;40), Music from Latin America (16:20 – ), Tai chi chuan Demonstration (16:45 – ), Dances from the Near East (17:10 – ), Djembe Performance (17:35 -).
  • October 23 Erhu Performance from China (10:00 – ), Dance from Peru and China (10:25 – ), Music and Dance from the Andes (10:50 – ), Bali Dance (11:15 – ), Hawaiian Hula (11:40 – ), Dance from India (12:05 – ), Dance from the Philippines (12:30 – 12:50).

INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE EVENT AT YOKISO VILLA

「揚輝荘」国際交流イベント

Come and enjoy a multicultural experience on Sunday, October 23 (13:30 – 16:30) at Yokisō Villa, the historic home of  Matsuzakaya Department Store founder Suketami Itō. Yokisō Villa揚輝荘is a 10 minute walk Kakuozan Subway Station, exit 1.

The program includes a guided tour of the historic residence, tea ceremony, music & song, and an ikebana demonstration. The event is free but places are limited to the first 100 applicants.
