Tanggal 11 Oktober 2012, hari ini, Gereja Katolik sejagat secara resmi memasuki suatu tahun istimewa yang disebut ”Tahun Iman”, bertepatan dengan peringatan Pembukaan Konsili Vatikan II yang berlangsung 50 tahun silam, tahun 1962, tahun bersejarah itu.

Tahun Iman yang akan berlangsung selama setahun ini akan ditutup pada tanggal 24 November 2013, bertepatan dengan Hari Raya Kristus Raja.

Secara resmi Bapak Suci Paus Benediktus XVI menjelaskan ikhwal Tahun Iman ini dalam Surat Apostolik berjudul ”Porta Fidei”, Pintu Iman, yang dikeluarkan pada tanggal 17 Oktober 2011, ketika sekaligus mencanangkan masa pelaksanaannya yang dimulai pada hari ini.

“It will be a moment of grace and commitment to an ever fuller conversion to God, to reinforce our faith in him and to proclaim him with joy to the people of our time,” demikian Paus Benediktus dalam kotbahnya.

Sementara dalam pesan tertulisnya Paus berkata: “Faith grows when it is lived as an experience of love received and when it is communicated as an experience of grace and joy.”

Bagaimanapun, iman adalah sesungguhnya hidup itu sendiri. Hidup yang memberikan kesaksian tentang kasih, kegembiraan dan harapan. Kesaksian yang akan terpancar dengan sendirinya, dan yang akan terasa serta tampak jelas pula bagi orang lain.

Saya teringat akan kesaksian hidup beriman orang-orang Katolik dari kalangan masyarakat biasa dan sederhana yang telah dan rasanya masih akan selalu menggugah hati sesama warga dari agama lain untuk hidup bersahabat dan bersaudara tanpa prasangka melalui interaksi keseharian mereka dari waktu ke waktu.

Saya sengaja mengutipnya di sini untuk mengingatkan diri saya sendiri bahwa kesaksian hidup beriman yang mampu menggugah itu bisa datang dari siapa saja dan dari pihak mana saja, bukan monopoli orang terpilih atau kelompok tertentu, asalkan ada keterbukaan hati tanpa syarat  untuk menerima dan membiarkan rahmat serta berkat Tuhan bekerja dalam dirinya.

Juga untuk memperlihatkan bahwa benih iman dapat terus bertumbuh dalam situasi apa saja, termasuk dalam situasi yang tidak nyaman bahkan berbahaya, asalkan ada ketulusan dan ketekunan untuk merawat dan menghidupinya.

Iman tak perlu diembel-embeli dengan slogan dan semboyan bernada gagah perkasa. Tak perlu tunggu dimeterai oleh dalil-dalil teologi nan rumit. Tak perlu pula dikawal dengan perisai dan lembing. Iman adalah kehidupan sehari-hari yang bernafaskan kasih, kegembiraan dan harapan. Di situlah kekuatannya.

Karena kekuatan itulah, iman akan membuat orang tak takut untuk bertindak atau berbuat sesuatu demi tegaknya keadilan dan kebenaran, namun tetap dalam semangat kasih, kegembiraan dan harapan pula. Iman sejati senantiasa bebas bersaksi dan selalu tanpa pamrih.

Kesaksian tentang iman orang-orang Katolik sederhana itulah yang antara lain ingin saya angkat dari buku ”I Remember Flores”, ketika seorang Komandan Angkatan Laut Kekaiseran Nippon, yaitu Kapten Tasuku Sato, yang bertugas di Flores pada masa pendudukan Jepang, menorehkan catatan berikut ini:

” … Flores people had taught me that weapons of war might destroy all the churches, yet there was something that would live on through it all – the Faith of the people. In Flores I was near the fire and a spark of that Faith caught fire in my own soul.”

Tasuku Sato, yang notabene non-Katolik, setelah menunaikan tugasnya di Flores hingga saat mengalami dan menderita kekalahan perang, masih dengan kesan yang mendalam tentang kesaksian hidup beriman orang-orang sederhana di Flores, selanjutnya antara lain mengatakan:

”It is not hard to see the hand of God in my assignment to a land of Faith for the war years. His fingerprints are discernible in many places where I was tenderly guided or saved from dangers”, kali ini sambil mengakui bahwa dia sendiri pun ikut terserap dalam kekuatan iman itu, dan terlindungi pula.

Kini kita boleh bertanya, masihkah iman itu berbinar dan berdampak sebagai kabar gembira bagi orang lain pada saat kita memasuki Tahun Iman ini? Ada aneka jawaban, tentu saja. Baiklah dijadikan bahan permenungan.

Di antaranya satu hal sudah pasti, bahwa warga Gereja Katolik sejagat, di belahan bumi mana pun saja, tak hanya di Flores pulau yang kecil itu, terpanggil kembali untuk memperbaharui diri dan memberikan kesaksian hidup beriman yang sepadan terhadap sesamanya, warga dan penghuni zaman baru ini.

Sementara itu, pelbagai kegiatan dalam aneka bentuk dan wujud tentu saja akan dilakukan selama setahun mendatang, sejalan dengan ujud utama yang disampaikan pada saat pemakluman Tahun Iman ini, atau pun ujud-ujud khusus yang menyapa situasi setempat.

Namun, iman dalam kehidupan nyata, baik sehari-hari maupun pada saat-saat luar biasa, yang tersamar maupun yang terlihat dan bisa dirasakan oleh siapa saja, serta menjadi rahmat dan berkat buat siapa saja, itulah anugerah dan sekaligus kekuatan dari Tuhan yang kiranya perlu dipinta dan disegarkan kembali secara istimewa pada kesempatan Tahun Iman ini.

Known as “Little Kyoto”, the small castle town of Gujo Hachiman in Gifu Prefecture is easily accessible from Nagoya and offers an authentic Japanese small town experience with temples, a castle, old-fashioned narrow streets.

Exploring Gujo Hachiman

The town is best experienced on foot. The old town, temples, castle, the narrow traditional streets, and the beautiful Yoshida River are all within easy walking distance. So before you go, make sure you download a city map and the two self-guided walking tours from the official English website www.gujohachiman.com/kanko.

Each self-guided walking tour includes a full set of detailed instructions and a detailed map in PDF format that can be downloaded and printed. You can also rent a bicycle from the Gujo Hachiman Kinenkan Tourist Center to speed up your walking tour; 300 Yen per hour or 1500 Yen for a full day.

The Home of Replica Foodサンプル王国郡上八幡

A great thing about going to a restaurant in Japan is that you know exactly what they serve and how big the portions are by looking at the very realistic-looking wax samples in the restaurant window. If you’ve recently been to a restaurant and chose your lunch based on the wax models there’s a good chance that the models were made in Gujo Hachiman. Take a little bit of Japanese culture home with you by making your very own replica food sample!

★Food Replica Workshop さんぷる工房

Visitors can either make 3 pieces of tempura (costs 1000 Yen, takes 30 – 50 minutes) or a dessert strap (costs 850 Yen, takes about 15 minutes).  Reservations are required for all workshops and can be made by either calling 0575-67-1870 or visiting in person on weekends, holidays, and during the school summer break. Visitors can also visit the small factory workshop.

★Sample Village Iwasaki さんぷるビレッジいわさき

Founded by Ryuzo Iwasaki in 1932, the Iwasaki company is the nation’s leading producer of replica food. The company headquarters house a wide display of replica food as well as providing workshops for visitors. Museum admission is required for all workshops.

The Regular Workshop 通常体験is available year round. Visitors can choose from Set A or Set B

• Set A: 3 pieces of tempura, lettuce, and 2 candles – 1000 Yen per set
• Set: B: 1 piece of tempura, lettuce, and 2 candles – 700 Yen per set

The Special Workshop 特別体験is only available to individuals on weekdays outside of the school summer break. Visitors can choose from a variety of items including a parfait, a pizza or okonomiyaki keyring, spaghetti, soba, or a kakigori. Prices vary.

Getting to Gujo Hachiman 郡上八幡アクセス情報

• By Train: From Nagoya Station take the JR Tokaido Line to Gifu 岐阜. From Gifu take the Takayama Line 高山線to Mino Ota 美濃太田. In Mino Ota transfer to the Nagaragawa Private Railway 長良川鉄道 to Gujo Hachiman 郡上八幡. Takes approximately 2 hours 45 minutes (including transfers); costs 2430 Yen. Its a 15 minute walk from the station to the center of Gujo Hachiman.
• By Bus: Highway buses also run daily from Meitetsu Gifu Station (C stop) at 08:40 & 10:15. Costs 1480 Yen. Takes approx 1h 15mins.
• By car: A 3 minute drive from the Gujo Hachiman exit 郡上八幡on the Tokai Hokuriku Expressway 東海北陸自動車道.

MOON VIEWING AT THE SCIENCE MUSEUM

市民観望会「月をみる会」

Observe the moon through the science museum’s large telescope; other smaller telescopes will also be available.

THE OSU STREET PERFORMERS FESTIVAL

This annual festival started in 1978 as an alternative to the Nagoya Festival. Around 250 (45 groups) street performers, musicians, and artists will be showing off their skills with their dances, juggling, visual comedy, and magic routines on Saturday & Sunday throughout the day at over 15 locations in and around the Osu shopping district. Collect a schedule and work your way around from show to show. Admission is free, after-show donations to performers are encouraged.

The highlight of the festival are the oiran processions through the packed streets of the Osu shopping district. The oiran, were high-class, Edo-era female entertainers only available to Japan’s wealthiest and highest ranking officials.

INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE EVENT AT YOKISO VILLA

「揚輝荘」国際交流イベント

Come and enjoy a multicultural experience on Sunday, October 21 (13:30 – 16:30) at Yokisō Villa, the historic home of  Matsuzakaya Department Store founder Suketami Itō. Yokisō Villa揚輝荘is a 10 minute walk Kakuozan Subway Station, exit 1.

The program includes a guided tour of the historic residence, a Japanese tea ceremony, a noh performance, and an ikebana demonstration. The event is free for foreign nationals (500 Yen for Japanese) but places are limited to the first 100 applicants. MOTOPIA – THE SUZUKA CIRCUIT THEME PARK

As well as hosting the F1 Grand Prix, the Suzuka Circuit in Mie is home to Motopia モーとピア a racing-themed amusement park.

Putti Town

★What’s there?

Motopia is divided into 6 areas and has a total of 29 fun rides and attractions for all ages.

☆In Putti Town (コチラのプッチタウン) children can take a variety of mini vehicles for a spin or experience the children’s driving school. Children can also experience riding a motorcycle in the Motto Field area (ピピラのモトフィールド).

☆The park’s newest attraction is the Racing Theatre (レーシングシアター) where you can experience the sights and sounds of motor racing from the perspective of the driver from in front of a 19m-wide screen.

☆There are also Racing Karts where older children can reach up to speeds of 25km/h. For the more adventurous there are also Advance Karts that can reach speeds of up to 54 km/h; those without a driving license have to take a warm-up lesson.

☆For non-racing types there’s also a kit-making class and an hour-long mechanics class where you can build, test drive, and take apart your own go-cart. ☆If you want to stay longer the park has a hotel and camp site.

★Getting to Suzuka Circuit

• By car: A 30 minute drive from the Suzuka or Kameyama exits on the Higashi Meihan Expressway 東名阪自動車道. Car parking if free on weekdays during school term time, 1000 Yen at all other times; other prices may apply on race days.
• By train – option 1: A 20 minute walk from Suzuka Circuit Inō Station 鈴鹿サーキット稲生駅. From JR Nagoya Station take the JR Kansai Line to Yokkaichi and change to the Ise Railway (伊勢鉄道 ise tetsudō).
• By train – option 2: From Kintetsu Nagoya Station take an express or limited express train to Kintetsu ShirakoStation 白子. Then take a bus from the west side of the station. It takes 25 minutes, costs 380 Yen for adults & 190 for children, runs 1 -2 times per hour with additional services on race days.

JAPANESE MASTERPIECES FROM THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, BOSTON

Known as a Mecca for Asian art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston has an estimated collection of over 100,000 works of Japanese art. In terms of both quality and quantity, this collection is one of the best in the world and contains many superlative artworks indispensable for an understanding of Japanese art. The 2nd half of this exhibition provides an opportunity to view 37 masterpieces from this collection, including 12th century Buddhist artwork, medieval ink paintings, early Kano school, early modern paintings, and work of the eccentric genius Soga Shohaku (1730-1781).

MINO WASHI PAPER MUSEUM

Washi is the Japanese term used to describe paper made by hand in the traditional manner. Washi is generally tougher, and more expensive, than regular paper and is mainly made using fibers from the bark of the gampi tree, the mitsumata shrub, or the paper mulberry tree.

Mino washi is a type of Japanese paper created in Mino Province (now Gifu Prefecture). Used in the production of many traditional crafts including shōji doors, lanterns, umbrellas, and fans, its use became widespread across the whole of Japan due to its high quality and relatively low cost during the Edo Period.

Paper is still made today in the town. The Mino Washi Paper Museum 濃和紙の里会館  offers visitors the chance to discover this tradition and make their own paper using traditional method and materials. There are washi making experience workshops, a shop, and a showroom to learn about the history of Mino Washi paper.

Using authentic craftperson’s tools and natural raw materials, why not challenge yourself and have a go at making some traditional-style paper? All course prices do not include museum admission.

★Mino-Han Course 美濃判コース A short 20 minute course that uses a traditional method of paper making known as nagashi-zuki to make a sheet of Mino-han paper (approximately 33cm x 45cm). Maple leaves can be added to the paper if requested.

• Cost: 500 Yen　 Takes: approximately 20 minutes
• Available: 09:00 – 16:00; reservations not required except for groups of 10 or more.

★Rakusui Course 落水コース A 30 minute course that lets participants create patterned paper. At first a sheet of Mino-han paper (approximately 33cm x 45cm) is created then is showered with water to create a basic pattern. Animal and flower patterns can also be added.

• Cost: 500 Yen  Takes: approximately 30 minutes
• Available: 09:00 – 16:00; not available to groups.

Once you’ve made your own Mino Han paper or Rakusui paper, you have the option to go a step further and make your own original washi light美濃和紙照明(an additional 2000 Yen) or washi partitioning screen美濃和紙ついたて(an additional 1500 Yen).

★Postcard Course はがきコース Using a method known as tamesuki, participants can make a set of 6 postcards. Maple leaves can be added to the paper if requested.

★Graduation Certificate Course卒業証書コース Make your own original washi certificate for your school, club, or course. Its also possible to add an insignia, logo, or emblem.

• Cost: 700 Yen
• Takes: approximately 40 minutes
• Available: 09:00 – 16:00. Only available to groups, reservations are required.

★1 Hour Challenge Course 紙すき職人に挑戦　1時間コース From preparing the raw materials and the pulp tub to the final product, learn how to make your own Mino-han paper like a pro.

• Cost: 800 Yen
• Takes: approximately 60 minutes
• Available: Saturdays 11:00 – 12:00. Reservations are required, limited to 10 participants.

★Full Day Challenge Course  紙すき職人に挑戦　1日コース A full day inclusive tour ideal for small groups of 6 or less or individuals who want a deeper understanding of the process. Includes a tour of the facilities, cutting and preparing the tree fibers, pulp preparation, paper making, and drying. Participants make 6 sheets of Mino-han paper.

• Cost: 3000 Yen
• Available: Weekdays 10:00 – 15:00 including a 1 hour lunch break (available at additional cost).*

Open to elementary school students and up (elementary school students must be accompanied by an adult). Reservations are required at least 3 days in advance; limited to 2 to 6 participants.
